Polk County Library Temporarily Closes in Response to COVID-19 Pandemic

The unprecedented COVID-19 health crisis is changing daily life for everyone. The evidence points to early social distancing helping to slow the spread of the virus.

As we have reviewed the information from public health officials and in response to the confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our surrounding county, Polk County Library has made the difficult decision to close all our locations to the public effective March 17th through March 31stWe will re-evaluate further closing later in month.

The Polk County Library will not charge any overdue fines and all checkout periods will be extended through April 1st.   All pending holds will be frozen so you will keep your place in line when we re-open. You will not be penalized on any returns and holds.  Missouri Evergreen has suspended Resource Sharing with other libraries across the state until April 6th

As always, our broad collection of digital resources like ebooks, audiobooks, music, movies, and databases are available 24/7. We have increased digital download capabilities for hoopla and OverDrive during this time and, we encourage all to utilize these options.

The decision is a difficult one. We care deeply about serving our community, recognizing that the Library and its many services are an invaluable resource. But we feel this is the responsible thing to do at this time. Institutional closings are inevitable, and the longer we delay, the less benefit is derived. We hope that this decision – and similar action being taken by other institutions, agencies, and organizations – will maximize the benefits of recommended social distancing.

We appreciate the support of our staff, our customers and our community during this challenging time. We are committed to continuous communication to keep our staff and communities informed if and when any of our services, hours, or programs change. Please monitor our website or the library’s Facebook for the most up-to-date information.
